Classes
The following classes represent Colleen Markley's past teaching engagements with The Writers Circle. While she is currently on sabbatical to pursue her MFA in Creative Writing at Columbia University, these offerings reflect both her unique curriculum and her experience teaching some of the organization's most popular courses.
Original Curriculum

Humor – The Secret Superpower Everybody Has and Every Genre Needs - This class helps writers harness humor to elevate the impact of their writing. Whether crafting creative nonfiction essays, using humor to alleviate tension in memoir or fiction, or writing a full comedic series, this workshop provides generative exercises and feedback. It is designed for writers at every level, from seasoned humorists to those new to incorporating laughs into their work.

Peaceful Productivity: Meditation for Writers and Creative Spirits - Drawing on humor and authenticity, Colleen shares easy-to-employ methods for a meditation practice focused on a writing habit. Inspired by her own 49-day meditation and writing ritual, this four-week workshop offers a guided meditation and an invitation for generative writing. The goal is to help writers find the space needed for a grounded, nourishing, and productive creative life.

Memoir Writing - Memoir writing is the process of adapting your true-life experiences into a compelling narrative. This class provides the tools needed to develop and strengthen the writing process, exploring how to structure stories, bring them to life with vivid detail, and enhance overall writing. Through prompts, supportive round-table discussions, and constructive critique, writers learn how to build their personal stories into a creative whole.

Where Do I Begin? - This workshop is for anyone who longs to write but doesn't know where to start, or for writers who have dabbled but lost their way. It helps participants find their way by first releasing the writer within through creative prompts to get the words flowing. The class then moves into discovering the elements of all good stories, including character, conflict, action, and setting, providing a strong foundation for new writers.
